Provider-search guide
Understanding NPI directory data
NPI directory information can make a provider search easier, but it has limits that are important to understand.
What an NPI is
A National Provider Identifier is a standard identification number used in healthcare administration. The public NPPES NPI Registry can include a provider’s name, taxonomy, practice address, phone number, and other administrative record fields.
What a public record does not establish
An NPI record does not by itself confirm a current license, a practice relationship, service quality, appointment availability, insurance coverage, fees, office hours, or suitability for your needs. Those details should be confirmed with the practice or appropriate authority.
Why records may differ from a practice website
Source records can be updated on a different schedule from a practice website, and a directory refresh can occur after a source change. If details conflict, contact the practice directly and consult the official source record.
Requesting a correction
Providers can use our correction pathway to report a directory issue. For changes to the source record, use the relevant NPPES update process.
